“ 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗦𝗶𝗹𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘄𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝗕𝘂𝘀𝗶𝗻𝗲𝘀𝘀 𝗼𝗳 𝗬𝘄𝗮 𝗛𝘁𝗮𝘂𝗻𝗴, 𝗦𝗮𝗴𝗮𝗶𝗻𝗴 ” Sagaing was the residing home of ancient Myanmar kings and because of its monasteries and numerous religious buildings, it is a place of high value for Buddhists. One of the earthenware of Sagaing; Sagaing Pot ( Drinking Water Pot) and silverware are popular among people. The silverware business is mainly in Ywa Htaung Village located on the highway of Sagaing-ShweBo. The silverware business in Ywa Htaung Village is an ancient artistry passed through generations for about 800 years. Although there is no evidence of the history of Ywa Htaung Village documented in books, based on the information from the villagers, Ywa Htaung Village existed since the Bagan Dynasty and their ancestors were Pyu people who were professional goldsmiths and silversmiths. According to U Win Maung, a Burmese culture expert, Htaung from Ywa Htaung comes from the Thai word “𝘁𝗵𝗼𝗻𝗴(ทอง)” which means gold. The author of 𝗠𝗮𝗻𝗱𝗮𝗹𝗮𝘆 : 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗖𝗮𝗽𝗶𝘁𝗮𝗹 𝗖𝗶𝘁𝘆, 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗖𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗿 𝗼𝗳 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗨𝗻𝗶𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗲, 𝗧𝗵𝗶𝗱𝗮 𝗦𝗮𝗿𝗮𝘆𝗮 remarked that the goldsmith business in Ywar Htaung Village came from the Thai goldsmiths who were brought by Myanmar Kings after winning the war. In Ywa Htaung, it is known that when making silverware, they classify it into three groups, the traditional Myanmar style, the colonial style and the modern style. When making silverware based on the traditional Myanmar era, they imitate the products used by the ancient upper class and in royal occasions. The colonial style started during the colonial era, includes a mixture of western culture and arts and is also known as the 𝗩𝗶𝗰𝘁𝗼𝗿𝗶𝗮 𝗦𝘁𝘆𝗹𝗲 or the 𝗥𝗼𝗰𝗼𝗰𝗼 𝗦𝘁𝘆𝗹𝗲. These days, it is popular among foreign buyers. Traders especially from India buy and distribute the silverware to Europe and America. The modern style silverware doesn’t have the pure Myanmar traditional twist and culture embedded into it, instead it is customized based on the buyers and their taste. Due to popular demand among foreign buyers, Myanmar traditional style and the colonial style silverware are more produced. In Ywa Htaung District, Sagaing, there are about 10 private silverware business owners who sell their products in shops on the Sagaing-ShweBo highway. Because of the expensiveness of raw materials and the product itself, the silverware business mainly targets the overseas market. Unfortunately due to the Covid19 pandemic, some have been put on hold and the damage percent is up to a high 90 percent. Thank you for reading about the silverware business in Ywa Htaung Village, Sagaing till the end. Lat Mhu Club will come back with more interesting topics!
